Point Handspike
Apr 7
Point Handspike, Macquarie Island. Apparently unridden, and probably the most isolated rideable wave in the world. Well we think it's rideable. Tim took an old Stranger board down there for his 12 month stint on the island - which is between Tasmania and Antarctica - and found this. He intends to ride it, and we intend to keep you posted.
Here's an extract from the email Tim sent with these pictures:
"I'd been talking to a couple of the old winterers in the bar last night about the point, and they were saying they were spewin that they'd never brought boards down. They'd asked if they could bring em and the answer was NO. Why ask. I've just got to get the board fixed up and
i've got all the gear to do that.
Anyway, we walked out and checked out the wave, and we were blown out. Lots of rotting bull kelp and bull elephant seals hauled up on the rocks. And the wave is awesome. I'll get some better pics shortly, but these ones are of the middle section. It was pretty solid 6 feet with a few bigger ones crankin through. 200 meter solid rides, although you could probably make it right down the point (almost 1 km).
Water temp... 6 degrees C could be a bugger, but an immersion suit should do the job. "
We're looking forward to more news and pics Tim. But don't freeze your nuts off for our entertainment!
